It gives me true pleasure to introduce my third solo work for trombone and wind orchestra, Two-Bone Concerto. It is written for two tenor trombones and follows two notable offspring, my 1995 T-Bone Concerto and 2007’s Canticles for bass trombone. This new work is written for and dedicated to trombone legends Joseph Alessi and Jörgen van Rijen. who, in my mind, are among the world’s finest trombone players. Besides Alessi's and Van Rijen’s orchestral positions as principal trombone with the New York Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam respectively, they both have built outstanding careers as soloists, and they also frequently perform together with the World Trombone Quartet, along with Michel Becquet and Stefan Schulz.
The trombone was my primary instrument during earlier years when I was performing more than composing or conducting, and it will always remain close to my musical heart. I had the honor to conduct both Joe and Jörgen separately many times in performances of T-Bone Concerto all over the globe, and we all have become close friends. So it was about time I wrote a piece to showcase both their highly individual, yet equally stellar virtuosity and witness their chemistry on stage. No commission involved, I wrote Two-Bone Concerto purely out of friendship and admiration for their fabulous musicianship.
The world première of Two-Bone Concerto took place during the International Trombone Festival at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. I couldn’t think of a better platform than this prestigious festival, with numerous renowned trombone players, students and fans attending.
