Ch'ella mi creda

(from La Fanciulla del West)
Giacomo Puccini/Arr. Johan de Meij
Giacomo Puccini

Recorded on CD Amstel Classics 2010-01

After the success of Madama Butterfly in 1904, Giacomo Puccini again selected a text by the playwright David Belasco: The Girl of the Golden West or La Fanciulla del West. Although the opera became an immediate success in America, the work never received the same recognition as other works by Puccini – except maybe in Germany. Perhaps this relative oblivion can be attributed to the subtle integration of the arias within the whole. The musical style also differs from Puccini’s other works: in La Fanciulla he makes an excursion towards the impressionism of Claude Debussy. The lovers Minnie and Ramerrez are immersed in the authentic ‘couleur locale’ of the Wild West, with its many other fortune-hunters.

Ch’ella mi creda libero e lontano is the final tenor aria sung by Dick Johnson (a.k.a the bandit Ramerrez) before his death sentence. Already with his head in the hangman’s noose, he sings that he was hoping for the Sheriff and the miners not to tell his beloved Minnie about his ill-fated destiny. Instead, he wishes Minnie to be told that he has gone away for good: “Let her believe that I am far away and free […] and that I will never return!”
In this arrangement of Johan de Meij, the solo trombone takes over the role of hero Ramerrez.
