Surround Sound

Søren Hyldgaard

Before the composing of this piece, Surround Sound used to be a concept confined to movies or home theatre viewing. When sitting in the cinema hall some of the sound effects, and some times indeed even the music, seems to be coming from behind your back or traveling over your head — that’s surround sound.

When I was approached to compose a short, efficacious fanfare in the event of the inauguration of a large, high profile cultural center in the city of Lyngby outside Copenhagen, I was inspired by the fact that a state-of-the-art, 11-theatre complex constituted a considerable part of the Cultural House. Why not write a musical piece in “Surround Sound”? It turned out that the concert hall was ideally suited for the purpose. Behind the audience is a balcony, most likely built for lights and sound mixing — a perfect stand for a couple of musicians serving as ‘surround performers’ in conjunction with the orchestra on the main stage.

Thus, Surround Sound is a composition meant to be experienced live rather than merely listened to. The audience will feel the drum rolls and trumpet signals flying across the hall like a ball being tossed back and forth. Heads up!

Performance Suggestions:
In order to obtain the ‘Surround Sound’ intended for this composition, the following off-stage directions should ideally be followed and if necessary adjusted to fit the settings of the concert hall in question:
* One cornet/trumpet player and one percussionist, playing the snare drum, perform from a balcony or in a hall corridor behind the audience. Alternatively, the performer will be standing in the aisle of the extreme back row
* One cornet/trumpet player performs from a backstage position (or at the side of the stage)

The opening section of Surround Sound is to be performed on the basis of the players knowing the offset tempo by heart; however, the conductor should be cueing the on-stage bass drum & cymbals. The most effective “surround sound” gimmick is accomplished by minutely obeying and almost exaggerating the crescendo - decrescendo nuances ‘cross fading’ between the two ends of the concert hall.
