Tivoli Festival Overture

Søren Hyldgaard

The TIVOLI FESTIVAL OVERTURE could be seen as a not-so-distant cousin to Søren Hyldgaard’s HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN SUITE; the famed Tivoli Gardens in central Copenhagen served as an inspirational source to the composer as much as it did to Andersen. The immortal poet was among the celebrities who attended the opening of “Carstensen’s Garden”, as Tivoli was initially called when it opened its gates in 1843.

‘The Strauss of the North’ was a nickname given to Hans Christian Lumbye, Tivoli’s first maestro and Head of Music - and a musical icon in Golden Age popular music in Scandinavia. Søren Hyldgaard’s TIVOLI FESTIVAL OVERTURE is as much a tribute to Lumbye and his lilting and always tuneful pieces written for Tivoli. Hence, noticable mostly to Danes and regular Tivoli visitors with a keen ear for music, Sõren has included tiny glimpses of Lumbye’s Champagne Galop and Pictures of a Dream - but carefully wrapped in his own melodic creations. However, the first soothing bars actually cites the Copenhagen Town-Hall bells, the tune of which is heard every hour by all Tivoli Gardens visitors.
